The Parks and Recreation Department offers an established, fully licensed, creative, hands-on curriculum that is differentiated to meet children where they are and allows for long periods of time to play and explore the environment. Children self-select activities that encompass all areas of physical and cognitive development including math and science exploration, literacy and communication, dramatic play, creative arts, small motor, sensory play, and construction. Time is spent each day with individual children, small groups, and the entire group. The programs meet in the Gillham Recreation Center and utilize all resources, including the gym, library and playgrounds.
This program utilizes a play, theme and inquiry based approach that is communicated to parents through a monthly calendar. Each day will follow a routine that includes Small Motor Activity; Large Group; Free Choice Time; and Outside Play.
Our Mission
Children come to school as competent, naturally motivated learners. The mission of the Huntington Woods 3 Year Old and Pre-Kindergarten Programs is to ensure that these characteristics are maintained and strengthened, and to set the stage for learning by preparing a rich and varied environment and encouraging children to engage in activities which carry their development forward in an active learning classroom.
